1. how to write a christmas song
this is the first in my collection of christmas songs recorded over the years. something that came up recently is that i don't really like "christmas" art/culture (many people i love and respect do just let me be a grinch in peace!). this song started with the idea of writing a christmas song that used the word "goddamn" which i thought was so provocative and hilarious at the time (it was 2008). most christmas music is sacred and this song's elevator pitch is what if a christmas song was profane (but in a wry cheeky way rather than something actually heavy or dark or real). i think the biggest influences were pavement for the vocals and lyrics and dinosaur jr. for the concluding solo. it's hard to be funny in songs and not all the lines land but i think the sleigh bells are pretty funny.
